They say success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. It remains to be seen which one of those this project will be, but it certainly has plenty of parents.  In particular, the support of my advisers from graduate school, Betsy Blackmar and Barbara Fields, has been invaluable, as well as the input from other scholars who selflessly stepped up to share their insights, notably Bryant Simon, Bill Graves, Peter Coclanis, and David Farber.  My friends Joel Suarez, Ryan Reft, Rob Baker, Marni Davis, and, of course, Saira Mazhar have also been instrumental in keeping this project alive when its fate seemed in doubt.  There are many, many other people — friends, colleagues, librarians, interviewees — who I am keeping a running tally of, just so I don’t forget anyone.
